We do not authorize any wholesaler, to merchandize for sale, our books/items on an auction site. If a book is purchased through a retail pricing/means, then the property of the owner – purchaser – has the right to do with what they purchase, as they like. No wholesaler will be approved unless a valid Internet Retail Website, (a non-auction shop/site), or Brick/Mortar shop information is provided.
We make our Books, unlike other bookmakers; we do contract out our work to other bookbinders. Our designs are our own original pieces or those authorized for use by the artist who created them.
Please be advised we do offer artwork from other artist so please respect the copyright law for them as well. Our Books ARE NOT ALLOWED to be sold on EBay or any other auction site.
Our books are copyright to us and anyone found duplicating our work would be prosecuted fully of the law. We will not sway with this issue. Please understand, we do not place this here to be rude. We obviously do not wish this to happen but there are some folks out there who are not as honest as the rest so we simply need to protect our work.
Regular wholesale: We are happy to supply books for your brick & mortar store. We can offer either the books we have listed, a book of your own design, or custom orders from your customer. (Please contact us for rates). All wholesalers are required to sign a wholesale agreement that states our guidelines and practices.
We DO NOT offer Wholesale on non-book items,Drop Shipping: We are also happy to offer drop shipping if you sell on the internet and do not wish to stock our Books in your inventory space. Drop Shipping = from us to your customer’s door. The shipping is calculated properly when the ship to address/zip-code is entered. Please remember: Domestic shipping is via FedEx = all points within Continental United States; International shipping is via the United States Postal Service-USPS = all points outside of the Continental United States. For ALL international shipments we require a phone number to be furnished to us – this will help with any Customs questions/issue that may arise.
Also, include any pertinent information that will help process your international order through Customs. Please be advised it is up to you to make your customer aware of time frames, our books, unless purchased from our clearance page or one of a Kind page, are NOT made. They DO take time to create, as we are extremely busy and no longer able to guarantee a 6-week ship time. We do our best to put our wholesalers at the top of the list so rest assured your wait would no longer be eight or more weeks. We work very hard everyday to meet and try to meet deadlines, but like any custom item crafter, this may not always be the case. Please make your customer aware that delays can and do happen.
There are no extra drop shipping fees.
Minimum Orders: There are no minimum order requirements at this time for all Brick & Mortar Shops who are ordering for there own Inventory or for those who drop ship.
Requirements: In order for us to offer these programs to you, we must either obtain your website and/ or your storefront information as well as your business tax id or resale number. We simply need to see that you are in fact a business. We reserve the right to cancel any account we feel is abusing the wholesale discount.
All books must remain Timely Manor Book’s.Meaning no book shall be purchased & resold without credit being given to Timely Manor Books on it as publisher as the crafter of said book….i.e…(stating it is yours or using language such as “Timely Manor Books, Uplifting the Soul” in your advertisement). Should this policy be violated your wholesale account will be deleted. Our pictures are NOT to be used without our direct permission. Permission is given when you become an approved wholesaler. Clearance items are not reduced further.

Time Frame & Shipping:
Time Frame: Please be advised books can take anywhere from 4 to 18 weeks to complete then Ship. Un-expected delays can occur with leather & paper. We will do our very best to notify you of any issues that may arrive, please remember to add us to your safe list so you can receive our email, on occasions there can me missed emails or miss communication. We CANNOT control our suppliers. We do our best to have all papers on hand that we may need, but please keep in mind our marbled papers come from overseas and are hand made. A lot of time goes into this process of making these papers and we have no control over the time it may take the artisans to fill the order. If a paper is popular, like our bookbinder marbles or Florentine papers, the time needed to fill our order on rare occasions can stretch into months. This may be a long time but their work is the best we have found and we only use quality products to construct your book.For those that are needed immediately we use 60# white paper provided by our outsource drop and ship to your as is edited and accepted from first copy submitted to TJ Morris direct on her email and approved for publishing.
Again, we will email you and let you know if this is the case, or if you choose one, we will use your second choice for marble papers.
Please be sure to make your first and second choice selections so that way there will be no delays with your book, again this allows us to serve you and/or your customer to the best of our ability. We want to express all of these things to you so you know how many wonderful artisans actually play a part in your book’s creation.
This is why our product is unique and completely custom. With custom items, there can always be possible hold ups. We WILL do our best to insure a timely delivery of your book to your and/or your customer.
As we say these books are born and we believe them to hold, and need to be created, with the type of energy required to be a powerful item for your magical path.
You will not find any Mass Produced bargain store constructing here. Please keep in mind that we are just two people and one of us does work full time as well as working for Timely Manor Morris Publishing, so we do our very best to contact you as fast as possible.

We do our very best to get all books done within a timely manor but we are also a small family run business so please keep this in mind.
Hand made items are time consuming and our books are born with the intention of you and your needs so please understand the wait involved.
All books are created as ordered unless otherwise stated. As there are small differences in leather and papers, we cannot guarantee the exact color seen but it will be the closest we can get it. We have many techniques of dying leather so rest assured you would receive the best coloration as possible.
Shipping: We are not responsible for damages that happen in shipping, all books and items are insured so if any damage has occurred please let us know and we will help you to file any claim that may be necessary. We use FedEx, Ups and USPS to ship our packages. Please be sure your address is correct, as we are not responsible for lost packages. Also, please be aware all shipping periods are estimates given by the shipping company and are not guaranteed times. We do not control their policies, but we will do our very best to work with you on any issue you may have. We process our shipments once a week; Labels are done on one day & the item will be picked up by, or dropped off at, FedEx that same week. You will receive an email with tracking info once your item has been shipped &/or processed.
Overseas Shipping: Please be sure to let us know of any issues for your countries customs. We like to be sure we have all needed info before shipping so we do not have any problems getting you your book as fast as possible. For example, some countries require you to declare the value, but not all do. Please let us know if anything like this is required for your country. Please note should a book be returned to our country do to an invalid address provided by the buyer – The buyer must pay an additional shipping charge to re-send the book.ALL international orders MUST have a valid phone number in order to ship.
Regular in stock items: Ship ASAP; any item not in stock will be ordered at time of purchase and shipped all together with the entire order. Shipping on these could be around two business weeks. If they are any item, you ordered that is on back order or not in stock we will let you know and order it right away. If for some reason our supplier has a back up or issue with an item we will notify you ASAP so you are aware of the issue.
Spell Scrolls & Oils are made when ordered so please allow the allotted period for each to ship.

Our staff consists of two people and the occasional Helper/Apprentice; we do from time to time use our Apprentices for book creation, as we need it. Each book is special to us as is each customer. Please do not assume we are ignoring you. We respond to everyone and if you have not heard from us please understand that there are many factors that may be hindering our reply such as email difficulties or in some cases an email may not be received by us or yourself ( again please be sure you allows our emails to be accepted through your Spam blocking and or virus protection. This is the internet age, but the internet is not fool proof and mistakes and or miss-haps with emails can occur.

Please be aware that we will do everything in our power to make your book the way you want it. We know, as we are only humans that not every book will come out just right, & for this reason, we have our wonderful warranty that comes with every book & covers it for 6 months after you buy it. If you get your book & you feel there is a mistake or error in it’s construction, just shoot us an email, we will be happy to take care of it & remake it if need be.Here at Timely Manor Books, we know we are not perfect as nothing really is, we are aware that from time to time things may not work as planned, only through working together with our customers can we begin to make sure your book is all you dreamed it would be. We like it very much when a customer brings to our attention a possible issue or problem as we feel we can only grow and change what needs to be, again through working together to make a change. We do honor our warranty & do our very best to make you as happy of a customer as is possible. On very rare occasions, we may not be able to either work with a customer on their project or we may be un able to accommodate the customer’s needs. In these cases we will do our very best to take care of the situation and come to an agreement to suit all.
Returns:
Timely Manor Books will take returns within 7 days of receipt of any item except all Books of shadows, Grimoires, Journals or custom-made items. All Damaged or Clearance items are sold as is and are not returnable. Should you wish to cancel your order with us once it has been placed, you will be subject to a 20% Material charge as we order supplies for your book and most items cannot be reused for another book. These refunds will be issued within 30 days of request. All other items can be returned. Simply send the item in question back to us and we will gladly credit your card (Minus shipping) and /or send a check or money order refund to you. You may also request a store credit if you so desire or simply exchange it for another item. If you have any questions please feel free to email us and we will be happy to help. We want you to be happy with every item you purchase from us.

Your name, credit info and contact info will NEVER be given out to anyone unless you authorize it to be so or we are given a court order to do so. Effective June 1, 2010 TJTMWe offer a free open source online news magazine that can also be a social network place for all to meet in the global community.
We began as a group of artists, crafters, educators, folklorists, and Historical Society members that learned about the American Folklore and the Smithsonian. We held events from 2003 through 2007.
Due to the unpredictable weather in 2007, we decided to share our information with others as authors, publishers, writers, and meet at events that were already in place in various states in the United States.
We then learned in 2007 of the Iphone and Smart Phones and all that new technology had to offer us as individuals and groups. We joined many and took classes in computer science, and met programmers, and software developers at a convention in Nashville. We have attended various book clubs and writer conferences. We learned of our children desiring to share in their Anime and American Clubs in their schools.
We met at various locations including libraries and Book Stores such as Borders and Books A Million. WE decided to attend the American Folklore Society and learned that some of us were not masters in the anthropology and etymology. We decided that we were more about the middle class and common folk in America.
We then learned from others who were interested in our ideas, and interests that they too wanted to join us. We then welcomed all who desired to follow us in our endeavors to share our articles, photos, websites, and interests in all people and in all things in the world.
We decided to open up our organization to all people, and places in the world. We became the Global Community that we refer to as ACE.
We now strive to share our mission statement with everyone and include everyone on our free open source social network and ACE NEWS.
We had a special niche with Theresa J. Thurmond Morris who had many friends that were her fans and readers who desired to share in enlightenment of the Ascension Age and Psychic Awakening Classes.
We recognize that Theresa J. Thurmond began teaching and holding classes, seminars, events, psychic fairs in Honolulu, Hawaii from 1989 through 1994. We decided to ask Theresa to become the Founding President once again of our group formed in 2007.
Theresa ran the organization from 2007 through 2009 when we disbanded our non profit organization officially to become what Theresa now shares with her own support for our benefit. We now share in an open source social network and create our own ACE NEWS MAGAZINE.
We share in ALL CONFERENCES and support organizations, associations, groups, and clubs. We provide promotions and share knowing publicists.
When I was a little girl, I didn’t know that I was different from most people on earth. I thought about what I was told to think about. I did as I was told and I was considered a very good girl and was happy to please. There was not much to do as a child except follow those who were considered the adults in my life. I had a mother and father, two grandmothers, and I do remember my paternal grandfather and I loved him very much. One day he passed away and it was hard on my father and I wanted to see him and being only three years old it was never explained to me other than he went to Heaven. The rest of my life was spent looking for heaven on earth. My life took on several twists and turns including near death experiences and being a paranormal investigator as an adult. There is much in life I cannot explain and there is much I wonder about in this world and want to know so I keep searching for the answers to my questions. Types of Papers Published in Cladistics Five types of paper are published in the journal Cladistics:
Review articles,
Regular articles,
Forum papers,
Letters to the editor,
And
Book reviews.
Review Articles:
Review articles should provide a general overview of a topic important to systematics; the literature coverage need not be exhaustive, but should be sufficient to be instructive to a new audience.
Regular Articles:
Regular Articles generally report original research in the field of systematics. This research may concern general philosophy and methodology, empirical studies of a particular taxonomic group, or applications of cladistics to diverse problems ranging from biogeography to conservation biology or linguistics.
Forum Papers:
Forum papers usually have as their focus a consideration of work already published in Cladistics or in other journals. These papers may be critiques, responses to critiques, clarifications, or the drawing of broader implications from some other previously published work.
Authors are encouraged to be concise and direct in their Forum papers as these usually comprise fewer pages than Regular articles.
Letters to the Editor:
Letters to the editor are much shorter notes concerning an issue of general importance to the field and are intended to have a shorter turn-around.
Book Reviews:
Book reviews are usually solicited by the Book Review Editor. Submission of Manuscripts (updated December, 2004) Manuscripts should be submitted through ScholarOne Manuscripts®

Ideally, the submitted manuscript should consist of a single file including text, tables, and figures. This file should be an MS-Word file with the figures embedded, which will allow the reviewers to make editorial remarks directly on the manuscript.
If there are no figures, the file may be RTF.
Embedded images should be at a sufficient resolution for printing and review but not at such a high resolution as to make the file unmanageably large.
Please try to keep submitted files below 3 Mb. Final images for accepted manuscripts at a higher resolution than those that are submitted for review are encouraged, and may be provided on disk at time of acceptance (see Item 7 below for details).
Authors are requested to pay attention to the instructions listed below concerning the preparation of the manuscript.
Manuscripts deviating significantly from the required format will be returned for revision. The Society does not limit the length of manuscripts, but authors are requested not to exceed the length of an individual issue of the journal (about 100 printed pages).
If there are any doubts as to suitability, authors wishing to submit long manuscripts should contact the Editor before considering submission. Papers must be submitted exclusively to Cladistics and are accepted on the understanding that no substantial part has been, or will be, published elsewhere.

Formatting of Manuscripts If submitting electronically (preferred), send the manuscript, formatted as specified below, as an attachment to an e-mail message to the Editor or an Associate Editor.
In the e-mail message state what word processing program was used to create the document and format of illustration files (e.g., TIFF, JPEG, etc.).
If submitting by regular mail, one original and three copies of each manuscript, including all figures and tables, should be submitted. The manuscript should be complete, with tables, figure captions, and figures and should be double-spaced and printed on one side of the paper only.
All figures and photographs should be submitted as either laser copies or high-quality glossy prints as appropriate. A disk (floppy or CD-ROM) of the final version of the manuscript must be provided in addition to hard copies, as accepted manuscripts will be published from disk (do not send disks as submission of manuscripts for review). Final versions of the hard copy and the floppy disk must be the same.
It is essential that the disk contain any last-minute changes. File name(s) should be given with the disk, with separate file names for: text, references, tables, figure captions. Be consistent: use the same presentation for all headings, etc. that are to appear the same in the finished printing.
Special characters:
We will need to know if you have used a keyboard character to represent a character that is not on your keyboard, e.g. Greek letters. Tables may not be set from disk, and it is essential that an adequate hard copy be supplied. The disk and hard copies of the final (revised) version of the manuscript must be accompanied by the completed Copyright Assignment Form, which will be forwarded by the Editor-in-Chief or is available on the Theresa Morris web page.
Until these forms are received the manuscript cannot be put into production. Assignment of copyright entitles the corresponding author to a free PDF of their article. Please note that authors should always retain a copy of all material. Papers should be submitted in English and should be as concise as possible, compatible with clarity and completeness.
All unusual or hand written symbols should be identified. Care should be taken to differentiate between certain letters and numbers (e.g. the letter O and zero, the lower case letter l and the number 1).
With multiple authors, one author must accept responsibility for all correspondence (the ‘corresponding author’). Papers should conform to the following layout:
(1) Title page. This should include title, authors, institutions, and a short running title. The title should be concise but informative and, where appropriate, should include mention of a higher taxon. A subtitle may be included, but papers in numbered series are not accepted. Names of new taxa should not be included in titles.
(2) Abstract. All Review articles, Regular articles or Forum papers must have an abstract. The abstract must be submitted on a separate page. The abstract is of great importance as it may be produced elsewhere, and is all that many see of the published work. It should be 100-200 words long for Regular articles and may be shorter for Forum papers. It should be in the form that is intelligible if published alone in conjunction with the title. It should not include references.
(3) Table of contents. A list of first, second and third order headings should be provided on a separate sheet. This is not published but is used to assist publication.
(4) Subject matter. The paper should be divided into sections under short headings. Except for systematic hierarchies, the hierarchy of headings should not exceed three. The relevant Codes of Nomenclature must be strictly followed. Use SI units and the appropriate symbols (e.g. mm, not millimetre; µm, not micron; Myr for million years).
Avoid elaborate data matrices, species lists and character lists within the text but include them as Appendices. Keep footnotes and cross references to a minimum. Abbreviations of non-standard terms should follow, in parentheses, their first full usage.. .

After receiving the tracking number for your manuscript from the Editor by date Year, Month, Day, Author, Title, and assigned Number;
These data will be made available to the referees but not to the community at large until such time as the paper is accepted. If the paper is not found to be acceptable for publication, the data and associated files will be removed from the directory structure and destroyed.
Referees are reminded of their responsibilities to keep all such data confidential and that failure to do so constitutes a serious violation of trust and scientific propriety.
Morphological data Character descriptions, character argumentation and material examined must be submitted for deposition on the web site as plain text, HTML or PDF formats. Images for character and state descriptions, images must be submitted as JPEG/JPG or GIF format at 72 dpi and with dimensions no greater than 6′ x 6′ (and preferably smaller).
They must be clearly named and numbered (e.g., MES001.JPG) and an associated figure legend must be included in the email to the Associate Editor Mark Siddall that has these files as attachments. Taxon by character data matrices may be submitted as text files only and in any of the following formats: plain text (do not tab delimit; include names of characters and states after the matrix); WinClada (which is the same as Hennig86 or Nona/Piwe but includes character and state information); fully annotated Nexus including character and state information. Molecular data Matrices DNA or RNA data may be submitted as: a plain text alignment (do not tab-delimit);
WinClada/Hennig86 format which presumes 0/1/2/3(/4) are A/C/G/T(/-) respectively; Nona dread format; Xac format; Nexus format. Scientific Names Use scientific names as defined by the relevant organisation for each organism, e.g. plant viruses, latest ICTV nomenclature. Full scientific names must be given when organisms are first mentioned, with the generic name being subsequently abbreviated to the initial.
All gene names and loci should be in italic; proteins should be upright. Optional Supplementary Documentation If there are additional figures beyond those to be included in the printed portion of the paper that add to the scope and depth of understanding issues or data in the submission, they may also be submitted in accordance with the guidelines above.
Executable binary applications may be submitted if they are to be made freely available to the community. (5) References. Authors should use the system illustrated below. Only full articles which have been published or are in press may be included in the reference list. In the text, unpublished or submitted studies should be referred to as such (e.g. J.M. Smith, unpublished), or as a personal communication. It is the authors responsibility to obtain permission from colleagues to include their work as a personal communication. References should be cited in the text by author and date, e.g. Hennig (1966).
JOINT AUTHORS:
Joint authors should be referred to by et al. if there are more than two, e.g. Farris et al. (1970). More than one paper from the same author(s) in the same year must be identified by the letters a, b, c, etc., placed after the year of publication. Listings of references in the text should be chronological, e.g. (Hennig, 1966; Farris et al., 1970). At the end of the paper, references should be listed alphabetically according to the first named author. The full titles of papers, chapters and books should be given, the abbreviated names of journals, with the first and last page numbers. Citations in the text should read thus: (Nelson and Platnick, 1981; Nixon, 1999)…, Farris (1983) …, Brundin (1966) said …, Hennig (1966, p. 31) …. Note that names of joint authors are connected by ‘and’ in both text and literature cited. The References section should follow these guidelines.

REFERNCES:
References should be listed alphabetically with journal titles abbreviated according to the World List of Scientific Periodicals and its supplements. For books, give the title, name of publisher, place of publication, page numbers and indication of edition if not the first. Give foreign language references in ordinary English alphabetic form but copy accents in French, German, Spanish, etc. For the Cyrillic alphabet use British Standard 2979 (1958).
If only a published translation has been consulted, cite the translation, not the original. (6) Tables. Keep Tables as simple as possible and avoid vertical rules. Type legends to Tables in numerical order on a separate sheet. (7) Illustrations. These may either be computer-assisted drawings, output from programs, ink drawings or half-tone illustrations from black and white photographs. Use one consecutive set of Arabic numbers for all figures (do not separate ‘Plates’ from ‘Text figures’ but treat all as ‘Figures’). Electronic files with line-art (including cladograms) should be submitted as vector art (e.g., Illustrator, EPS, or PDF). If these are provided in pixilated form they must be at least 300 dpi, anti-aliased text and lines, and RGB (not CMYK, not indexed color) and as a JPEG or TIFF file. Grayscale or color art should be at least at least 300 dpi, and RGB (not CMYK, not indexed color) and as a JPEG or TIFF file.

Lines must be clean and heavy enough to stand reduction; drawings should be no more than twice the journal page size. Explanations should, as far as possible, be placed in the legend; the drawing itself should contain a minimum of lettering. Photographs are best submitted in their final size and a scale line should be included to indicate magnification. Type legends for figures in numerical order on a separate sheet.
Authors wishing to reproduce figures from other published works must themselves obtain permission and before the paper is submitted for consideration. If authors wish their artwork to be returned after publication this must be clearly stated on each figure; artwork is otherwise not returned after publication. It is the policy of TJMORRIS ACIR for authors to pay the full cost for the reproduction of their color artwork.
Therefore, please note that if there is color artwork in your manuscript when it is accepted for publication, Blackwell Publishing require you to complete and return a color work agreement form before your paper can be published. (8) Proofs.
Revised manuscripts must be submitted in the final, fully corrected form.
Make certain that all references in the text agree with those in ‘REFERENCES’, that spelling is consistent throughout, and that all figures and other details have been double-checked. Page-proofs only are supplied, by electronic mail as a PDF file, and authors may be charged for alterations if they are numerous. In the case of multiple authors, proofs are normally only supplied to the one author responsible for correspondence.
Authors should normally mark up corrections on a hard copy of the proofs using the guidelines provided therewith, and return this by regular mail to the Production Editor at Blackwell. If corrections are minimal, the author may supply a list via e-mail to the Production Editor, copied to the Managing Editor.

(10) Cover Photographs
Photographs of high quality suitable for the cover of Cladistics are welcomed. It is preferred, but not essential, that these should be related to submitted papers. Initially, low-resolution images should be sent to the Managing Editor, accompanied by a brief description, which will be reproduced on the inside front cover of the journal. If selected as cover art, then high-resolution versions of the images (preferably TIFF format) should be submitted to the Managing Editor, either via electronic mail (up to 12Mb) or on CD-ROM. A high quality colour print of each image should also be sent for colour matching purposes. These items will not normally be returned. If the copyright owner of the images is also an author of an accepted manuscript, then the Copyright Assignment Form completed for the manuscript will also cover the images.
If copyright of the images is held by a third party, then it is the authors’ responsibility to ensure that said third party completes a separate Copyright Assignment Form for the images and submit it at the same time as the high quality images.

The history of Fan Expo Canada begins in 1995 with the launch of the Canadian National Comic Book Expo which was not held in the spacious South Building at the Metro Toronto Convention Center, but at the impressive Roy Thompson Hall (where scenes of X-Men would later be filmed) that would accommodate the approximate 1,500 attendees. Back then, there were only five guests who included Bernie Wrightson and Bill Sienkiewicz.
With the continued success of the Expo, the venues changed to accommodate the growing number of fans, guests, celebrities, and exhibitors. These included the Holiday Inn on King in 1996 and eventually to the home of Fan Expo Canada; the Metro Toronto Convention Center in 1997. The initial years at the MTCC were held in the bright and appealing North Building, but the massive popularity of the Expo demanded more space and since 2006, is now held in the depths and vastness of the South Building.
Venues were not the only reflection of growth for Fan Expo Canada. In 1998 the Canadian National Anime Expo joined the Comic Book Expo to provide fans with a wider range of selection and in 1999, the Science Fiction Expo followed suit. Rue Morgue, who sponsors the “Festival of Fear” a.k.a Horror Expo joined in the crusade to stimulate the senses in 2004 and in 2005, the Gaming Expo brought Fan Expo Canada to its full circle, providing fans with “THE” expo to attend.
Our fans make the Expo what it is today and to reflect its scope, the five genres; Comic, Anime, Science Fiction, Horror and Gaming, were re-branded and merged to become Fan Expo Canada. Folklore is the traditional art, literature, knowledge, and practice that is disseminated largely through oral communication and behavioral example. Every group with a sense of its own identity shares, as a central part of that identity, folk traditions–the things that people traditionally believe (planting practices, family traditions, and other elements of worldview), do(dance, make music, sew clothing), know (how to build an irrigation dam, how to nurse an ailment, how to prepare barbecue), make (architecture, art, craft), and say (personal experience stories, riddles, song lyrics). As these examples indicate, in most instances there is no hard-and-fast separation of these categories, whether in everyday life or in folklorists’ work.
The word “folklore” names an enormous and deeply significant dimension of culture. Considering how large and complex this subject is, it is no wonder that folklorists define and describe folklore in so many different ways. Try asking dance historians for a definition of “dance,” for instance, or anthropologists for a definition of “culture.” No one definition will suffice–nor should it.
In part, this is also because particular folklorists emphasize particular parts or characteristics of the world of folklore as a result of their own work, their own interests, or the particular audience they’re trying to reach. And for folklorists, as for the members of any group who share a strong interest, disagreeing with one another is part of the work–and the enjoyment–of the field, and is one of the best ways to learn.
But to begin, below we have cited several folklorists’ definitions and descriptions of folklore, given in the order in which they were written and published. (One of them uses the word “folklife” instead, which American folklorists, following their European colleagues, have used more frequently of late.) None of these definitions answers every question by itself, and certainly none of them is the American Folklore Society’s official definition (we don’t have one), but each offers a good place to start. From time to time we’ll add the views of other folklorists to this page.
One thing you’ll note about these definitions and descriptions is that they challenge the notion of folklore as something that is simply “old,” “old-fashioned,” “exotic,” “rural,” “peasant,” “uneducated,” “untrue,” or “dying out.” Though folklore connects people to their past, it is a central part of life in the present, and is at the heart of all cultures–including our own–throughout the world.
